“When it comes to the things that matter most, we have so much more in common than what separates us." -Kamala Harris, The Truths We Hold

I wanted to read Kamala Harris' book prior to Inauguration Day. It was so important to me to see what our first female Vice President was all about and what she believed. Her book did not disappoint.
I really enjoyed The Truths We Told. While there was more policy than I would have liked, I loved how Harris mixed in stories from her years of public service, but included anecdotes on the state of our country woven throughout. I felt like you get a true glimpse into who Kamala Harris is and what she stands for.

Kamala Harris is the daughter of immigrants. She has worked hard for every accolade she has achieved. She started out hustling for votes in her first DA race in front of a supermarket with an ironing board, duct tape and a sign. She failed the bar exam her first time taking it, but didn't give up. She has climbed the political ladder through grit, passion, and ingenuity.
Many of the stories included are also a part of the “Kamala: Next in Line” podcast from @wonderymedia , which made the book even more enjoyable. I loved reading the chapter about meeting her husband Doug and appreciated how open she was about losing her mother to cancer. It was deeply personal and raw. Reading this book also gave me fire to read more about our prison system and racial inequalities in our country.
This book was published in 2018 and I can't help be think just how much has vastly changed in the two years since its publication. What I do know, is that Kamala's moral compass of "for the people" that rings true in all decisions she makes has not and hopefully, will not, change.
Today, Inauguration Day, is a momentous day for all women, young and old, across this nation. Never has a woman held a higher office in our country and I couldn't be prouder. I am ready for my daughter, my students, and all women across the country to see themselves in our new Vice President.
